Interesting Wine Facts
Wine has a very long and fascinating history, it is very
complex and can also be very new or very old. It would take years to totally
understand all of the the intricacies of wine, the parings of
food, the making of wine and especially how the grapes are grown
and where, to really become a wine connoisseur. Here are some
wine facts that will help you understand a little more about
wine to impress people when you want to make a good impression
at a high class party.
China has the largest amount of consumers of red wine against
popular belief that it is Italy or France
When someone asks you what country has the most red wine
drinkers most people will choose Italy or France however this is
not the case. Chinese cultures consume the most amount of red
wine.
Red is considered to be a lucky color in China and the
increasing popularity of red wine is due to this symbolic
importance. Combined with the health improving virtues of the
drink, this has caused the Chinese to grab a bottle from the
supermarket shelf more and more often than other cultures.
France actually decreased their consumption of red wine by 18%
or 150 million cases in 2013 as opposed to the Chinese who drank
their way to a record 155 million 9-litre cases of red wine in
2013 surpassing the French.
Although the Chinese does drink a lot of red wine, France still
drinks more wine (in all categories) per capita than the Chinese
with 53 liters per capita per year versus 1.9 in China.
When it comes to the biggest US wine consumers the leaders are:
Alabama, New York followed by Florida.
Cheers to the country that drinks the most wine per capita! If
you guessed the Vatican you would be right! They drink about 99
bottles of 75cl per year which is 74 liters per capita.
Actually, one of the world’s most famous Champagnes Dom Perignon
was named after a monk. Dom Pierre Perignon (1638-1715), an
early advocate of organic wine-making,
Red wine is better
for your health than white wine.
Because of the beneficial antioxidants such as polyphenol and
resveratrol that have cardio-protective effects and anti-cancer
properties that are found in the skin of red wines, whereas
white wine is processed without the skins, therefore red wine is
considered to be a better choice for your health than white.
Some studies show that white wine may even slightly increase the
risk of contracting cancer, especially of the digestive tract so
when given a choice select a good quality red wine and drink
only a few glasses of white wine a week. |
